5 Creative Ideas to Upgrade the Look of Your Old House

(Guest Writer: Summer Wilde)

If you have been living in a house for a long time and you have not done any renovation in a long time, you might be looking for a way to upgrade the look of your house.

However, you might be procrastinating on this upgrade because, to say the truth, the older the house, the harder the upgrade seems in the mind. You do not know where to begin, what to do next after you begin, or how to get the money for the upgrade, all that is on your mind is that you want to do an upgrade on your old house.

Here are a few creative ideas that you can employ in upgrading your house. You can do them by yourself so you do not have to worry about reaching down into your pocket to spend for the upgrade.

1. Plan the Upgrade

The first step to upgrading your house is to plan the upgrade.

Make a list of everything that needs to be changed. From the exterior of the house to all the corners of the interior. Write down everything that needs to be changed in the house. Also, write what you want to use as a replacement for everything.

In upgrading your house, you might not need to change everything; some things might just need to be repainted or repositioned, and this will be discussed much later. Put all your creativity into this planning. Take your time, do not rush the process.

You can start with the exterior. Take a day or two to walk around the house, and carefully take note of everything that needs to be changed. When you are done with the exterior, you can move to the interior, inspecting each room one at a time.

You can implore a family member, a friend, or a neighbour to assist you with this inspection. Two heads are better than one so an extra head could just make your plan more creative.

2. Thorough Cleaning

After planning the upgrade, the first thing to do is to give the house a thorough cleaning. You might be doing something similar to this during your general sanitation but this is a more in-depth cleaning.

Sweeping, brushing, scrub, make sure that every nook and cranny of the house is touched. You can take a leave from work to focus on this cleaning or you can do it when you are on vacation. Carefully and thoroughly clean the whole of the house.

It will require that you scatter and rearrange some things. However, other than giving the house a sparkling look, it makes you discover more places that need to be attended to during the upgrade.

3. Doorknobs and Sidings

One of the things that you must consider changing is your doorknobs and your sidings. They help improve the external and internal look of the house, especially the exterior.

A doorknob can be gotten from local stores around you. You can also check from used door knobs online or in salvage yards if you are looking to spend less on the knobs.

You also need to get attractive siding for your house. Check out siding contractors if you are looking for the best kind of siding that will fit your house. There are a lot of designs that you can choose from.

4. Painting

Another thing to do to upgrade the look of your house is to paint the house. Paint the interior and the exterior. You might have to take down pictures or artworks that are hanging on the wall.

You may not need a painter to paint the house. You can do painting with a family or friend to save cost. If you are indecisive on what colour to use for the paint, white is a general colour that can bring life to your house.

Also, you can paint or spray pieces of furniture in the house like your cabinets, bed, shelves, and so on to give them a shiny look.

5. Kitchen and Bathrooms

These are two important parts of the house that are often neglected as soon as we finish using them. Most times these two places might have lingering issues that we are aware of but are nonchalant about fixing the issues.

Change old cabinets in the kitchen and paint the ones that are still okay. The wall and floor of both the bathroom and kitchen should be cleaned and if need be, the tiles can be changed. Also, check the water outlet and the lighting in the bathroom and kitchen to be sure that they are okay.

Conclusion

Having someone or some people – family or friend – with you during the upgrade will bring a lot of fun, make the whole process faster and improving the overall result because there will be an influx of creative ideas to choose from. You do not have to move to a new house to feel like you are in the 21st century, a little upgrade here and there in the house can do a lot for you.
