Public service announcement: it’s Mother’s Day this Sunday (May 8). If you haven’t already decided how best to spend the weekend, fret not. We pick out some great activities that the whole family can enjoy whilst also celebrating motherhood. Who says only mummy gets to have all the fun?
1. Decorate your wall
Don’t leave the family portraits in the drawer. If you don’t have spare photo frames, one of the easiest and most creative ways to prop up those pictures is to mount them behind plasticine borders. Plasticine is gently adhesive, so it won’t leave lasting damage like nailing a conventional frame does, giving you the freedom to swap in a fresh layout on your wall whenever you please. The material’s malleable nature is also good news for the children’s playful hands, while its availability in a variety of colours means everyone’s favourite colours can now go into the same frame.

2. Go for free concerts

If you prefer to take mummy out, head over to Esplanade for a free 1-hour concert featuring Chinese hits from the yesteryear. The same venue is also set to host a later performance headlined by Malay oldies. Mum would approve of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO)-led gig at the Singapore Botanic Gardens too. Before leaving for the concert, don’t forget to let everyone pick out their favourite snacks for the picnic basket because the evening ends with an open-air screening of the Adam Sandler comedy “Pixels”.

3. Unwind at a retro yoga studio

Treat mum (and yourself) to a yoga class at this newest Tiong Bahru outpost of Yoga Inc. Lessons are offered in various levels of intensity, so there’s something for everyone. Yoga Inc. is also one of the few yoga studios in Singapore that lets you pay for individual sessions – great if you don’t want to overcommit to a package only to find out later that mummy isn’t so hot on yoga. Brownie points for the branch’s thrifty colour palette and spartan look, which not only help it blend seamlessly into the neighbourhood’s heritage, but also create a more tranquil setting for well, yoga.

4. Treat mum to a meal … at a cooking class

Mum would surely appreciate a pampering meal at a fancy restaurant, but we’re going to push the button here and suggest that you gift mum a more hands-on experience instead. Kitchenware retailer and cooking school ToTT is offering a special Mother’s Day class where you will get to pair up with your mum and sample and cook chichi European fare such as Prawn Spaghetti and Pan-seared Seabass. Alternatively, sign her up for a demonstration class where she will get to see assorted seafood and carrot cake being prepared for her.

5. Make a Mother’s Day video
It doesn’t have to cost anything to let your mum know how much she means to the family. Better yet, it can be as simple as getting each member of the family to record a heartfelt message for mum or making a montage out of mum doing everyday things like making breakfast, watching television and reading the papers. We prefer a more quirky touch, so we ransacked the app store and found this app that lets us imprint mum’s face onto a series of whimsical animations.
