Fabric vs leather sofas – Which is Better for You?

If you’re trying to decide between a getting a fabric or leather sofa, we hope this guide will aid in your decision-making process. Sofa shopping can be confusing. Choices are aplenty, and two of the more popular ones are fabric and leather sofas.

Here’re some points we recommend you take note of when shopping for a sofa:
1) Maintenance – How much time and effort are you willing to spend on maintenance?
2) Budget – How much are you willing to spend?
3) Variety – Which appeals to you more? Interesting designs and colours, or basic colours that are easy to match?
4) Durability – Want a sofa that’s built to last?  Or do you love to refresh your home’s décor regularly?
5) Lifestyle – What are your preferences, and do you have to cater to the people/pets at home?

Fabric Sofas
If you’re getting a fabric sofa, you’ll be happy to know that there’s an infinite number of choices when it comes to design. Motifs? Patterns? Or rainbows, even? No problem – you can even customise your fabric design if you want.

Fabric Sofas can be more difficult to maintain, because unlike its leather counterpart, you can’t just wipe it down when it’s dirty – you’ll have to remove the covers and wash them.  If you have pets or young children at home, fabric sofas are probably not a good idea. However, if you’re confident that nobody at home is accident prone, fabric sofas are a good choice! One point to note about accidents though – when it comes to being scratch-proof, fabric trumps over leather.

Usually less expensive, fabric sofas are perfect for the creative type who’s into frequent decor revamps!

Leather Sofas
Posh and comfortable, leather sofas are built to last. Leather is known for being sturdy against scratches, stains and spills, and thus, requires less effort to maintain. For example, if you spill food or water on your leather sofa, all you need to do is to wipe it down, no harm done!

However, while leather can be cold to the touch at first, you may find it to be warm and sticky after a while. This may prove to be uncomfortable in Singapore’s warm climate if you don’t have an air-conditioner installed in your living room.

So… Fabric or Leather?
If you’re looking to have a sofa that lasts and don’t mind forking out more money, leather may be the better choice for you. If prefer interesting designs and don’t mind more making putting in a little more effort on maintenance, we think fabric’s a cool choice!

To add my two cents, leather sofas can be an excellent choice if you're looking for something long-lasting.

MaxNearly

Real leather has a timeless appeal and is incredibly durable. It's relatively easy to clean, especially compared to fabric, and can actually look better with age if well-maintained. You might find this piece from Von Baer https://vonbaer.com/blogs/blog/real-leather really insightful when considering leather as an option. It talks about the various grades and characteristics of real leather.

MaxNearly

The struggle between choosing a fabric or leather sofa is real, especially when both options have their own sets of pros and cons. I appreciate the detailed points you've outlined; they're definitely helpful in guiding someone's decision-making process.
