Pest Repellent
First up, if you hate (and fear) cockroaches, tea tree oil will do the trick. Simply ix a few drops of tea tree oil in water, and use to wipe down surfaces, or dip cotton balls into the mixture and leave them in corners of your home.
For flying insects like mosquitoes, flies, moths, and other biting insects, use lavender oil. Make sprays or lotion with water and a few drops of lavender oil, and voila! You’ve got your very own chemical-free insect repellent. If you want a potent mixture, add in a few drops of eucalyptus and clove oils.
Another great alternative for repelling ants, roaches and mice? Get your hands on some peppermint oil. As usual, spray it around your home, or soak them in cotton balls, and leave in corners of your home.
Bonus tip: Not an essential oil – a mixture of water, pepper and chili sprayed around lizard-prone corners will help keep the icky pests out!
Wood Polish
Citrus oils like lemon and lime can be used to polish wood floors and furniture (do not use on cooking utensils). Rub it in real good, and shine up your wood fittings and fixtures so they look brand new!
Apart from brightening up your home and giving it a fresh look, the citrus scents will also help to deodorise your home – providing a calm and refreshing scentscape.
Air Deodoriser
Other then peppermint oil, essential oils made from spices like cloves, cinnamon or cardamon are another great way to neutralise odors at home. Boil in water or spritz around the home, the choice is yours!
If you have pets, lemongrass and geranium oil can also be used to rid funky pet odors. Mix a few drops of oil with water in traditional burners for a quick fix. For stronger odors, simply mix the oils in your mop water and mop the affected areas.
