How to Protect Your Home from Damage When Moving

One of the things you need to make sure when moving home is to not cause any damage to both your old and new home.

If you are renting your old place and you cause any damage to it, there’s a big chance you won’t recover your deposit fee. If you are moving out of your old home to sell it, you will be obliged to do some repairs to make it sellable. And you don’t want to cause any damage to your new home, do you?

So, it is important that you be very careful when moving out and in your home. Whether you are hiring Singapore movers to do the job, or you’re doing it on your own, there are preparations you need to make and some points you need to remember during the moving day so you can avoid any issues that can cause damage to your home when moving.

1. Prepare Your Supplies

You can’t just go into war without ammunition, and the same goes when moving home. You will need proper moving supplies and equipment to ensure the safety of your items to be moved and your home. Here is the list of the items you will need.

  • Medium to large cardboard boxes
  • Heavy-duty packing tape
  • Carpet runners
  • Blankets or comforter
  • Corner guards
  • Protective plastic cover
  • Moving dolly with rubber wheels
  • Moving straps
  • Sliders
  • Heavy-duty doormats

2. Pack Items Properly

A sudden drop on a heavy item can risk damage to your floors. Prevent this from happening by properly packing your moving boxes, especially those that contain heavy items like kitchenware and appliances. This way, you can reduce the chance of it bursting in the middle of shifting.

Wrap your furniture with moving blankets or protective plastic covers. Any rough edges and sharp corners should not be exposed, so make it a point to have it covered. You might think your furniture will survive the move without a scratch but, parts of your house like your walls may not.

3. Protecting Your Home

Make sure all areas of your house that are damage-prone during the move are well protected. Covering them properly is essential to avoid any chances of dents, scratches and cracks in case an item gets accidentally dropped or dumped into any part of the house. Discussed below is how you will protect each element of your home that is susceptible to damage when moving commences.

Floor

Make sure your floor, which is the most damage-prone part of your house when moving, is well protected. Whether you have a hardwood, tiled, or carpeted floor, one of the best ways to safeguard it is to never slide anything no matter how light the item is.

Carry the light items as much as possible. Whenever you need to move a heavy piece of furniture, appliance or a moving box, use a moving dolly and/or sliders. Moving straps can also be used to carry heavy objects. This will make moving safer not just for your floors, but also for you and those helping you with the move.

Another thing you can do to protect your floor is by covering it. If you have a carpeted floor, you can buy adhesive carpet runners, blankets and drop cloths as a cover to avoid tearing it.

You may also use cardboard boxes - cut them and lay them flat on the parts of your floor with heavy foot traffic. Use some packing tape to secure the flattened cardboard boxes and avoid them from moving or sliding during the moving process.

An additional trick you can use is to place a heavy-duty doormat on the entrance of your home so people can wipe their shoes every time they step inside your house. This way, you can stop outdoor elements like dirt, mud, water and debris that can potentially cause damage to your floors from being carried inside your house.

Walls

Your walls have a high potential of getting damaged during a move too. One mistake can lead to rubbing at your painted wall or leaving a gash on it. So, you need to take precautions to keep your walls damage-free during the process.

The first line of defence is by hanging blankets or comforters along the section of your walls which will be most frequented by movers carrying objects to be moved. You can also tape flattened cardboard boxes on those areas.

Manoeuvring a big piece of furniture in a bend can be very tough. Using corner guards will ensure your wall corners are shielded whenever trying to squeeze in long and tall furniture along the bend. You can either use wooden or plastic corner guards, just make sure to follow the correct instructions on how to install it by reading the manufacturer’s guidelines.

You can also use bubble wrap to wrap the corners of your wall and properly secure it with painter’s tape (that offers enough adhesive and at the same time can cleanly come off after removal).

Bannisters

To protect your bannisters, drape over moving blankets on the railings and secure them with packing tape to keep them in place. Avoid placing the tape in direct contact on wood finish railings as it will leave a gummy residue that is hard to remove from the wood surface.

To keep anyone from tripping or falling while carrying a heavy item, place anti-slip covers on your stairs. This will ensure the safety of the item being carried, your bannisters, and most especially the person carrying the item.

4. Keep Your Kids Away From The Action

If you have kids at home, make sure to keep them away from the action. Having them around can distract you or your movers from the tasks at hand. Having them running around is also not safe as accidents can happen. Prior to your moving day, make sure to designate a trusted person to watch over them as you work on moving your stuff.

5. Hire Singapore Movers

It requires proper knowledge and experience in order to move your belongings out of your old home and into your new home in the safest way possible. You’re lucky if you have enough experience in this field, but if not, hiring Singapore movers can be one of your best choices.

With these moving professionals moving your belongings, especially heavy and large furniture like beds, couches, and even a piano, you can have the confidence that your home is protected against any possible damage during the move.

The best way to start finding trusted movers in Singapore, international movers, and piano movers is by gathering at least three to five quotes to have enough choices. Wise Move – a marketplace for moving companies in Singapore – can help you easily get multiple quotes with just one inquiry. Submit a request to the platform and you will quickly receive competitive quotes from trusted and verified movers in Singapore.

Carefully check what the quote includes, to avoid surprises along the way. And most importantly, check reviews of each company’s previous customers to get an idea of the quality of their service.
