Event highlights include a tertiary student showcase Singapore poly and SIT, a Smart living and office interior showcase that was graced by Guests of Honor, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Finance, alongside Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Member of Parliament, and an MOU signing between SIDS and SGBC, Singapore Green Building Council in efforts to promote Green Interior Design
The event kicked off with an opening speech by the President of SIDS, Mr Keat Ong, who addressed the industry challenges and their upcoming initiatives.
“In the region, Singapore practitioners venturing abroad are facing increasing competitions from the rising talents of our counterparts . The natural advantage of being the fastest growing economy from the last few decades are fast diminishing. Nowadays, being a Singaporean designer abroad doesn’t automatically qualify you as a superior breed anymore, we have to fight fair & square for all given projects now. Thus, to improve our competitiveness, SIDS is working on a 2 pronged approach from the professional level, working with DSG to push for the accreditation of the profession; and the at the academic level, exploring with NUS to establish our very own Interior Architecture course.” - Prof Keat Ong, President of SIDS
Witnessing the MOU signing between SIDS and SGBC (Singapore Green Building Council) was Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Member of Parliament, who gave a speech that addressed the importance of this partnership between the two organizations.
“As design becomes more important for our economy, there is a need for us to continue to innovate and generate new ideas and fresh approaches that can serve the market better and also to bring these new ideas beyond the shores of Singapore. The internationalization of our industries is an important part of our next phase of economic development. This is where I see the value of the MOU between SIDS and SGBC. This MOU will help to re-inforce the importance of green design for our current and subsequent generation of interior designers. If we want our buildings to be designed sustainably, it must also mean that the interior of our buildings help to meet the green standards.” - Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Member of Parliament
After which the opening ceremony concluded with a symposium on Green Interior Design, led by Vice president of SIDS, Mr. Astley Ng.
He shared his decade long of experience in championing Green Interior Design, and shared about how buildings are the biggest contributors to pollution and where interior designers can make a difference by being environmentally conscious and being aware of the industry changes moving forward.
On a side note, our team is glad to be a part of this industry event and we look forward to support SIDS’s upcoming initiatives and contribute to design a better future for us all.
