Spread The Love This Christmas

Christmas is portrayed as the ‘season of giving’. Gift exchanges are popular during this time and the must-have activity in every Christmas party, whether it is with your colleagues, your family members or friends. Christmas is our favourite time of the year because that is when we get to spend and give presents – whether simple or extravagant – to the people we love.
But during this time of giving and sharing, are we willing to give...more?
An encounter with a World Vision pop-up booth in a popular shopping mall prompted this question. While merrymakers and shoppers abound, we fixed our eyes on the rows of photos detailing children from impoverished areas and their stories. Every child had a different story, but they came from similar circumstances – poverty, lack of education, lack of sanitary facilities, and other socio-political trials plaguing their young lives. In some areas, children who should have been in preschool are being trafficked instead.
In Singapore, our children have the privilege to go to school, a roof over their heads, clean water and food, and opportunities to live their dreams. But what about for children in countries that do not have such resources? With World Vision, the problems these children face are alleviated. But these children could only keep moving forward through generous donations and sponsorships.
That is where the ‘giving’ bit comes in. It is a word common in every Christmas anthem, but how far can we carry it? It is not just about the ‘season of giving’, as the lyrics say, it is about feeding the world and letting the less fortunate know it is Christmas.
