Top 3 Most Unsuitable Floorings To Have If You Live With Your Grandparents

It’s always important to take care of your family, especially the older generation. Grandparents are the cornerstone of our childhood, so it’s definitely our duty to make our homes as safe as possible for them if they live with us. So what are the top 3 most unsuitable flooring materials to have if you live with your grandparents? Let’s find out:

1. Slippery Glazed Floor Tiles

While typical glazed tiles are conventional, easy to install, easy to maintain and can even be cut to customized patterns, they are also cold, hard and provide zero cushion when it comes to falling down. The glazed finish also makes the surface extremely slippery, so if you live with your grandparents or aging parents, then it’s best not to go for this particular floor material. You’ll also have to be very careful about the grouting.

Last year, the tile-shattering epidemic in Singapore was top news in the renovation industry. While there were many theories on the topic, the tiles did crack like thunder when they broke, so it’s definitely not the top choice for flooring materials in a space with the elderly.

2. Hardwood

Hardwood floors are definitely gorgeous. They have the ability to completely transform the aura of any home. However, they are also extremely expensive to install and maintain – especially when you live with your grandparents. Hardwood flooring is initially resilient, but after a while it can also be susceptible to scuff marks from walkers or wheelchairs.

Additionally, hardwood can also be a pretty uncomfortable surface to take a fall on. It doesn’t provide much cushion to break a fall, which can result in a serious injury for the elderly. If you’re thinking of investing in such an expensive material choice, then make sure that they’d last for a long time. Otherwise, it’s just not worth the hassle.

3. Concrete

Concrete flooring is definitely very stylish, especially if you’re a fan of the industrial-rustic and shabby chic aesthetics. It is also extremely durable and easy to maintain, but it’s also very hard, which makes it the worst kind of flooring to fall on. It also doesn’t provide cushion for standing, and its rough surface can make it hard for your elderly grandparents to walk on it.

Moreover, if your concrete floor has not been treated properly, it can be very susceptible to moisture, which is always bad when you’re living with your grandparents.

So these are some of the worst flooring choices you can make if you live with aging parents or elderly grandparents. Such kind of floor finishes can cause more harm than good for a senior citizen, so choose your floors wisely.
