Contrasting bright colours, loud prints, and graphic illustrations come together in an irreverent statement that defies the traditional notion of interior design. Located in Germany, this whimsical wonderland that was designed and decorated by homeowner Mareike Scharmer is one that most would either appreciate enough to love or steer away from. As the interior designer and furniture artist creates quaint furniture, murals, and creative home accessories, it is of no surprise that she felt exceptionally thrilled when she got the keys to her very own abode in 2009. On the ability to adorn her home at free will, Mareike shared, “I can experiment with new colour combinations and customise any details. It’s a wonderful feeling!”
Like looking in a house found in Wonderland, contrasting hues and a bizarre mix of patterns keep this home far from ordinary. Tea party, anyone?
Your style is extraordinary and far from the norm. What are you inspired by?
Mareike Scharmer: I draw my inspiration from a bit of everything! I love Gaudi’s unusual architecture in Spain, vivid colours of Mexico, and the fairy tales from my childhood. It’s also delightful to be able to imbue the sun and warmth from Asia into my home in Germany.
Which is your favourite place in your home?
The kitchen and the bathroom. The other rooms are still works in progress.
Mosaic tiles in rainbow colours, baroque detailing, floral embellishments, and abstract prints clash and fight for attention in this bathroom. This psychedelic medley of colours, patterns and textures makes an engaging scene that is hard to ignore.
Like most interior designers, Mareike works meticulously by building up the details in each space. No two pieces of furniture are alike, and all are either made from scratch or painted by hand.

Personally, I would recycle waste materials or upcycle worn-out and old furniture as much as possible. Creativity is key, and I am extremely satisfied when I manage to bring these used objects back to life with tons of colour and doses of imagination. I feel that the process of creation is far more valuable than the final product itself.
The stack of plush cushions on this couch is a welcome invite for respite. Can flamboyance coexist with comfort? Ask the dog.
A wall mural takes pride of place in the living room. A lush jungle where a pair of cobalt blue macaws and a cheeky giraffe resides comes to life in Mareike’s wonderfully whimsical world.
How did your family and close friends react upon visiting your home for the first time?
I was really tickled by their shocked expressions and reactions! Not many houses sport unconventional colour combinations after all. But they love being in my pad, as they get to be immersed in a completely different world.
Any advice for fellow homeowners interested in DIY too?
My home is far from complete, so it leaves me room for change and it gives me the liberty to experiment! Don’t be afraid to be bold in interior designing, and just go for the style that you love.
